The Five Daily Salah
Salah is performed at five fixed times during the day, tied to the position of the sun. Each has its own window of validity and its own number of rak'at (units). The five together are the backbone of a Muslim's day.
Fajr
2 sunnah + 2 fardDawn , from first light to sunrise
Pre-dawn prayer. Performed before sunrise; missed if delayed past sunrise without excuse. Highly virtuous , the Prophet ﷺ said it is “the most difficult of prayers for the hypocrites, but if they only knew the reward, they would come to it crawling.”
Dhuhr
4 sunnah + 4 fard + 2 sunnahMidday , after the sun passes its zenith
Midday prayer, often called Zuhr. Performed once the sun begins its descent from the highest point. On Fridays, replaced by the congregational Jumu'ah prayer.
Asr
4 fardAfternoon , when an object's shadow equals or doubles its height
Afternoon prayer. Two valid timing methods: Shafi'i / Maliki / Hanbali use shadow length = object height; Hanafi uses shadow length = 2x object height (later). Both are correct within their schools.
Maghrib
3 fard + 2 sunnahSunset , immediately after the sun disappears
Sunset prayer. Performed promptly at Maghrib without delay , the Prophet ﷺ encouraged hastening to it. Window closes when the red twilight fades (Shafiʿi) or when whiteness fades (Hanafi).
Isha
4 sunnah + 4 fard + 2 sunnah + 3 witrNight , after twilight fades, before midnight
Night prayer. Best performed before the first third of the night ends. Witr , an odd-numbered prayer , concludes the night and is highly emphasized.
How are salah times calculated?
Salah times are derived from the sun's position at your exact latitude and longitude on a given date. The principal anchors are solar noon (Dhuhr), sunset (Maghrib), and shadow length(Asr). Fajr and Isha depend on twilight angles , and that's where the calculation methods differ.
| Method | Fajr angle | Isha angle | Common in |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISNA | 15° | 15° | North America |
| Muslim World League | 18° | 17° | Europe, Far East |
| Egyptian | 19.5° | 17.5° | Egypt, Africa, MENA |
| Karachi | 18° | 18° | South Asia |
| Umm al-Qura | 18.5° | 90 min after Maghrib | Saudi Arabia, Gulf |
| Tehran | 17.7° | 14° | Iran, Shia |
Switch methods in the Settings panel on any city page. If you're unsure which to use, ISNA is the default for North America and works well in most contexts; in Europe Muslim World League is more common.
Sunnah and Nafl Salah
Beyond the five obligatory (fard) salah, there are Sunnah Mu'akkadah (emphasized Sunnah) prayers attached to each fard, plus Witr at night and optional Nafl prayers any time outside the three forbidden windows (sunrise, solar zenith, sunset). The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever prays twelve rak'at in a day and night voluntarily, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.” , Muslim 728
Those 12 rak'at are: 2 before Fajr, 4 before Dhuhr + 2 after, 2 after Maghrib, 2 after Isha. Building these into your daily schedule is the easiest path to consistent Sunnah practice.
Etiquette (adab) of salah time
- Pray as soon as the time enters when possible. Early salah is the most virtuous, with the noted exceptions of Asr and Isha which can be slightly delayed.
- Make wudu before the time entersso you're ready the moment the adhan is called.
- Face the qibla. Verify the direction using a compass app or our GPS qibla finder.
- Pray in congregation at the nearest masjid when possible , 27 times more rewarding than praying alone.
- Don't delay past the next salah's time without genuine excuse. Once the next adhan is called, the previous prayer becomes a qada' (missed) prayer.

What is salah?▼
Salah (also spelled salat or namaz) is the ritual prayer prescribed in Islam, performed five times a day at specific times, Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (midday), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isha (night). It is the second of the Five Pillars of Islam and is obligatory for every Muslim past the age of puberty who is of sound mind. Each salah consists of a fixed number of rak'at (units), with specific recitations and physical movements.
What time is the next salah?▼
The next salah depends on your exact location and the current time. Use the tool at the top of this page , it auto-detects your city via GPS and shows the countdown to the next prayer. Without GPS access, pick your city from our 4,800+ city directory.
How are salah times calculated?▼
Salah times are based on the position of the sun at your specific latitude and longitude. Fajr is calculated as the moment of true dawn (typically 15° to 18° below the horizon depending on method), Dhuhr is solar noon, Asr is when shadows reach a defined length, Maghrib is sunset, and Isha is when twilight fades (typically 15° to 17° below horizon). Different scholarly authorities , ISNA (North America), Muslim World League, Umm al-Qura (Saudi Arabia), Karachi (South Asia), Egyptian , use slightly different angles. Switch methods in the Settings panel on any city page.
What is the difference between salah and namaz?▼
Salah is the Arabic term used in the Qur'an. Namaz is the Persian/Urdu/Hindi term used by Muslims of South Asian, Iranian, Turkish, and Central Asian origin. They refer to the same ritual prayer, the only difference is the linguistic origin. In English-speaking Muslim communities both terms are common.
Can I combine salah?▼
Yes, in certain circumstances. Dhuhr and Asr can be combined, and Maghrib and Isha can be combined, when traveling (safar) or in cases of necessity (illness, heavy rain, fear). Combining is done either by advancing the later prayer to the earlier time (jam' taqdim) or delaying the earlier to the later (jam' ta'khir). Fajr is never combined with another salah.
What happens if I miss a salah?▼
Missed salah (qada') must be made up as soon as possible after the excuse for missing has ended. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it should pray it when he remembers , there is no expiation other than this.' Intentionally skipping salah without excuse is a major sin and should be repented from, along with making up the missed prayer.
Is there a recommended time within each salah window?▼
Yes. Salah at the beginning of its window is generally preferred (a'wwal al-waqt), except in two cases: (1) Asr and Isha are best delayed slightly when possible (so long as the window doesn't end), and (2) Dhuhr in extreme heat may be delayed to be cooler, called 'ibrad'. Praying within the assigned window is always valid, but earliest is most virtuous for Fajr, Dhuhr, and Maghrib.
Are women required to pray five times?▼
Yes, the obligation of five daily salah applies equally to women and men once they reach puberty. Women are exempt from salah during menstruation and post-natal bleeding (nifas), and these missed prayers are NOT made up later (unlike fasts during Ramadan, which are made up). At all other times, the same five salah are obligatory.
