How Mecca's prayer times are worked out

From Mecca, the Qibla is 319° from true north. Face northwest to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 5 km (3 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Mecca's own coordinates (21.39°N, 39.86°E), not a national average. That is why Mecca's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Mecca timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Mecca lies well west inside its Riyadh time zone. So the sun peaks about 28 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 12:26 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 14h 55m near June down to 12h 12m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Mecca come from Umm al-Qura University, Makkah. The Umm al-Qura method sets Fajr when the sun is 18.5° below the horizon, and Isha 90 minutes after Maghrib.
