What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, observed worldwide by Muslims as a month of fasting (sawm), prayer, reflection, and community. It commemorates the revelation of the Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and intimate relations from Fajr (dawn) until Maghrib (sunset) each day. The fast is broken with iftar at sunset, traditionally with dates and water, followed by the Maghrib prayer and a larger meal. The pre-dawn meal eaten before the fast begins is called suhoor.
What time is iftar?
Iftar starts at Maghrib, the moment of sunset in your location. The exact time changes daily as Earth orbits the sun and shifts dramatically by latitude: in early Ramadan 2026, iftar falls around 5:45 PM in northern UK cities and around 6:15 PM in equatorial Singapore. Use the live tool at the top of this page to see iftar for your exact city today.
The Sunnah is to break fast immediately at Maghrib without delay. The Prophet ﷺ said: “People will continue to be in good condition as long as they hasten to break their fast.” (Bukhari 1957). Begin with an odd number of dates and water, then pray Maghrib, then eat the larger meal.
Iftar dua (recommended)
“Allāhumma laka sumtu wa ‘alā rizqika aftartu”
O Allah, for You I have fasted, and with Your provision I break my fast.
What time is suhoor?
Suhoor must end before Fajr, the dawn prayer. Eating or drinking after Fajr begins breaks the fast. Most scholars recommend stopping suhoor at least 10-15 minutes before Fajr (a buffer called imsak) as a precaution. The tool above shows suhoor cut-off for your location today.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged waking for suhoor: “Have suhoor, for in suhoor there is blessing.” (Bukhari 1923). Even a sip of water or a date counts. Suhoor helps energy and focus through the fasting day.
Tarawih, The Ramadan Night Prayer
Tarawih is the special nightly congregational prayer performed after Isha throughout Ramadan. Typically 8 or 20 rak'aat depending on the masjid's tradition. In the last 10 nights, many Muslims observe extra prayer in pursuit of Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree), which is “better than a thousand months” (Qur'an 97:3).

Fasting is obligatory for every Muslim who is:
- Past the age of puberty
- Of sound mind
- Physically able (not seriously ill)
- Not traveling a long distance
- Not menstruating or in post-natal bleeding
Those who cannot fast, due to chronic illness, age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or travel, may either make up missed days later or feed a needy person for each day missed (fidya), depending on their situation. Children, the very elderly, and the chronically ill are exempt entirely.

When does Ramadan 2026 start?▼
Ramadan 2026 begins at sunset on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 (1 Ramadan 1447 AH) and ends at sunset on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. Eid al-Fitr is observed on Thursday, March 19, 2026 (1 Shawwal 1447). Actual dates may shift by one day depending on local moon sighting (rūyat al-hilāl) in your country.
What time is iftar today?▼
Iftar (the meal that breaks the daily Ramadan fast) begins at Maghrib, the sunset prayer in your location. Use the live tool at the top of this page to see iftar time for your exact city. Maghrib varies by location and date: in northern cities like London or New York it can range from 5:30 PM in early Ramadan to past 8:00 PM in late Ramadan; in equatorial cities it stays close to 6:00 PM all month.
What time is suhoor today?▼
Suhoor (the pre-dawn meal before the fast) must end before Fajr, the dawn prayer. The tool above shows suhoor cut-off time for your location today. A 10-15 minute buffer before Fajr is recommended by most scholars (called imsak) to ensure the fast begins on time.
Is the iftar time the same everywhere?▼
No. Iftar is local sunset, which depends on latitude and date. Mecca breaks fast at a different time than London, Dhaka, or Jakarta. Even cities in the same country differ: Houston and New York both observe Maghrib at locally different times. Always use a calculation method appropriate to your city.
What is the difference between Maghrib and iftar?▼
Maghrib is the prayer performed just after sunset. Iftar is the meal eaten to break the day's fast, traditionally begun with dates and water immediately at Maghrib time. The two are linked: Maghrib's start IS iftar's start. Many Muslims break their fast, eat a small portion, then perform Maghrib prayer before the larger meal.
When is Eid al-Fitr 2026?▼
Eid al-Fitr 2026 falls on Thursday, March 19, 2026 (1 Shawwal 1447 AH) for most of the Muslim world following astronomical calculation. Saudi Arabia, the United States, and many other countries may confirm the date based on moon sighting on the evening of March 18.
What if I miss suhoor?▼
If you miss suhoor, the fast is still valid — suhoor is a Sunnah (recommended) practice, not a fard (obligatory) one. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Have suhoor, for in suhoor there is blessing.' Try to wake up at least 15 minutes before Fajr to drink water and eat something, even small, for energy through the day.
Does the time of iftar change every day of Ramadan?▼
Iftar is at sunset (Maghrib) each day. Sunset shifts by 1 to 4 minutes every day as the Earth orbits the sun, so over the 30 days of Ramadan iftar time can move by 30-90 minutes depending on your latitude. In northern cities the shift is much larger; near the equator it's almost flat. Always check today's exact time rather than relying on an old schedule.
