Why Prayer Times Differ Between Cities

🌍

Longitude shifts clock time

Every 15° of longitude equals one hour of time difference. New York (74°W) and Chicago (87°W) are 13° apart — Chicago's sun rises about 52 minutes later on the same clock. This is why two cities in the same time zone can still have different prayer times.

📐

Latitude shapes the season swing

The further north a city sits, the more extreme its seasonal variation. Seattle (47.6°N) can see Isha after 10:30 PM in June but before 7 PM in December — a 3.5-hour swing. Miami (25.8°N) experiences less than half that range. Minneapolis (45°N) is one of the US cities with the most dramatic variation.

⚙️

Calculation method matters

Most US mosques use the ISNA method (15° Fajr / 15° Isha angles). Communities from South Asia may use the Karachi method (18°/18°), which gives earlier Fajr and later Isha. Asr differs by madhab: Hanafi Asr is 30–60 minutes later than Shafi'i/Hanbali Asr. All our city pages include a method switcher.

📅

Times change daily

Prayer times shift by 1–3 minutes every day as the sun's declination changes throughout the year. This is why every city page shows a full monthly calendar — so you can plan ahead without checking daily. The shift is largest near the solstices and smallest near the equinoxes.

Prayer Times — Frequently Asked Questions

Why are prayer times different in each city?

Islamic prayer times are calculated from the sun's position relative to your exact location. Because the sun rises and sets at different times across longitudes, and its angle at noon differs across latitudes, every city has its own prayer schedule. A city further north (like Minneapolis or Seattle) experiences more extreme seasonal variation in prayer times than a southern city like Miami or Houston.

What time is Fajr in Minneapolis today?

Minneapolis Fajr times vary significantly by season — from around 3:50 AM in midsummer to 6:30 AM in midwinter, due to Minneapolis's northern latitude (44.97°N). For today's exact time, visit the Minneapolis prayer times page which is updated daily using the ISNA calculation method.

What are the prayer times in New York City today?

New York City prayer times change every day with the sun. In summer, Fajr can be as early as 3:45 AM and Isha as late as 10:15 PM. In winter, Fajr is around 6:00 AM and Isha around 7:00 PM. All five prayer times (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha) for NYC are available on our New York prayer times page, updated daily.

Do prayer times differ between Chicago and Philadelphia?

Yes. Chicago (41.8°N, Central Time) and Philadelphia (39.9°N, Eastern Time) have different prayer times both because of their latitudes and because they are in different time zones. Chicago is roughly 2° further north and 13° further west. In winter Fajr, Chicago may be about 30–40 minutes earlier than Philadelphia in local clock time. Always check each city's dedicated page for accurate times.

Which calculation method do US mosques use?

The vast majority of US mosques follow the ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) method, which uses 15° for Fajr and 15° for Isha angles. Some communities — particularly those from South Asian backgrounds — use the Karachi/University of Islamic Sciences method (18°/18°). Our pages default to ISNA with a method switcher so you can match your local mosque.

Why does Minneapolis have such large prayer time swings seasonally?

Minneapolis sits at 44.97°N latitude — relatively far north. The further from the equator a city is, the more extreme its seasonal changes in daylight. At the summer solstice, Minneapolis has about 15.5 hours of daylight, pushing Isha very late (after 10 PM). At the winter solstice it has only 8.8 hours, making the prayer windows very compressed. Cities near the equator like Miami experience much smaller variation.
