Most Stable Prayer Times in the US
At 34.05°N, Los Angeles has the smallest seasonal prayer time swing of any major American city. Fajr moves only ~1 hour 42 minutes across the entire year. Isha never exceeds 8:50 PM — meaning year-round evening congregation is practical. Compare to Minneapolis where Isha pushes past 10:30 PM in summer and Chicago where Isha exceeds 9:40 PM. LA's mild climate also means outdoor iftars during Ramadan are reliably comfortable.
LA's Muslim Communities
Los Angeles has one of the most culturally diverse Muslim communities in the world — Iranian, Arab, South Asian, African American, and Southeast Asian Muslims all have established communities across the sprawling metro.
Tehrangeles — Largest Iranian Diaspora Outside Iran
The LA metro is home to an estimated 500,000–700,000 Iranian Americans — the largest Iranian community outside Iran. Westwood Boulevard between Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvd is the commercial heart of "Tehrangeles," lined with Persian restaurants, jewelers, and cultural businesses. A significant portion of the community is Muslim (Shia and Sunni), with Persian-language mosques in Westwood, Encino, and the San Fernando Valley. The community observes Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha alongside Persian cultural events like Nowruz.
ICSC — Oldest Major Mosque on the West Coast
Founded in 1952, the Islamic Center of Southern California (ICSC) on Vermont Avenue is a landmark in American Muslim civic history. ICSC was among the first mosques in the US to give the Friday khutbah in English, to publish a nationally distributed Muslim magazine, and to build formal interfaith partnerships. It uses the ISNA method — the same as this page — and serves a racially mixed congregation of Arab, South Asian, African American, and Iranian Muslims.
Arab & South Asian Communities
Orange County — particularly Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Irvine — has a large Palestinian, Lebanese, and Egyptian Muslim population. The Islamic Institute of Orange County and many smaller mosques serve this community. In the South Bay (Torrance, Carson, Hawthorne), large Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Indian Muslim communities cluster around the South Bay Islamic Association. Artesia and Cerritos are the heart of the Desi Muslim corridor in LA County.
African American Muslim Legacy
South Los Angeles has a historic African American Muslim community going back to the 1960s. Nation of Islam temples operated throughout South LA, and Imam W.D. Mohammed's transition to mainstream Sunni Islam in the 1970s had deep roots here. Today, Masjid Felix Bilal (formerly known as Masjid Al-Rasool) and other South LA mosques carry on this tradition. The community overlaps with Inglewood and Compton, where Masjid Bilal— one of LA's largest African American mosques — is based.
Los Angeles Prayer Times by Month
LA's location at 34.05°N gives it the most stable prayer schedule of any major US Muslim city. Fajr varies by only 1h 42m across the year. Even at peak summer, Isha is before 9 PM — making regular mosque attendance practical year-round for working Muslims.

🧭 Qibla from LA: ~24° — Almost Due North
Los Angeles has one of the most surprising Qibla directions in the US — approximately 24° from true north, nearly pointing north. Because LA is so far west (118°W longitude) and at a moderate latitude, the great-circle path to Mecca goes north across the Pacific, over Alaska and the Arctic, then southeast down to the Arabian Peninsula. This defies the intuition that Mecca is to the east. Mosques in LA orient their prayer halls northward — which can look odd from the outside but is astronomically correct. Use our Qibla compass for your exact location.
