DC Metro Muslim Community
The DC metro area has ~300,000 Muslims spread across the District, Northern Virginia, and suburban Maryland — one of the most diplomatically connected and politically active Muslim communities in the US.
ADAMS Center — Largest Mosque in DC Metro
The All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) in Sterling, Virginia is the largest mosque complex in the Washington metro area. Founded in 1983, it operates a K-12 Islamic school, social services, and multiple prayer halls that fill to capacity on Jumu'ah. ADAMS serves a diverse congregation — South Asian, Arab, African, and convert Muslims from across Northern Virginia. Prayer times at ADAMS are 3–4 minutes behind downtown DC due to its westerly position near Dulles Airport.
Ethiopian, Eritrean & Somali Muslim Communities
DC has the largest Ethiopian diaspora in the US — and a substantial share are Muslim, particularly Oromo and Tigrinya-speaking communities. Shaw, Columbia Heights, and Silver Spring, MD are home to Ethiopian and Eritrean Muslim restaurants, mosques, and cultural organizations. Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Fairfax) has a large Somali Muslim community. The Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church has historically served many of these East African communities alongside Arab and South Asian congregants.
Muslim Government Employees & Diplomatic Community
DC has a uniquely high concentration of Muslim federal employees — State Department, Pentagon, intelligence agencies, and Capitol Hill. The Pentagon has a dedicated Muslim prayer room. Many Muslim ambassadors and diplomatic staff from Muslim-majority countries call DC home, giving the city a uniquely international Muslim character. Several Muslim Members of Congress have been sworn in, and the Capitol has a non-denominational prayer space used regularly by Muslim staffers.
Northern Virginia Corridor — South Asian & Arab Hub
Northern Virginia — particularly the Dulles Corridor (Sterling, Herndon, Reston) and Fairfax County — is one of the fastest-growing Muslim communities in the US. Large Pakistani, Indian, and Bangladeshi tech workers settled here during the 1990s–2000s dot-com boom, joined by Arab (Palestinian, Yemeni, Egyptian) and Afghan families. The NOVA corridor now has dozens of mosques and Islamic schools, and Muslim-owned businesses line Route 7 in Sterling and Leesburg Pike in Falls Church.
Summer Isha After 9 PM — Common in DC
In June and July, Isha in DC falls after 9:10 PM. Many DC-area mosques schedule Isha congregation at 9:30 PM during summer to allow time for travel. During Ramadan, Tarawih prayer often begins at 10 PM and runs until midnight, particularly at larger mosques like ADAMS Center. Government Muslim employees often take advantage of the later sunset — Maghrib after 7:45 PM — to break their fast at home before heading to the mosque for Isha and Tarawih.
Washington DC Prayer Times by Month
At 38.91°N, DC has a moderate ~2-hour Fajr swing. Winter Maghrib at 5:04 PM (December) means government Muslim employees can attend Asr at work and Maghrib just after their commute. Summer Isha pushes to 9:15 PM — later than Houston or LA but manageable compared to Chicago or Minneapolis.
