How Silver Spring's prayer times are worked out

From Silver Spring, the Qibla is 57° from true north. Face northeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 10,626 km (6,603 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Silver Spring's own coordinates (38.99°N, 77.03°W), not a national average. That is why Silver Spring's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Silver Spring timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Silver Spring lies well west inside its New York time zone. So the sun peaks about 77 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 12:53 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 16h 29m near June down to 10h 46m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Silver Spring come from the Islamic Society of North America. The ISNA method sets Fajr when the sun is 15° below the horizon, and Isha at 15°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Washington DC, Falls Church and Alexandria. Each is only a few minutes off Silver Spring's clock.
