How Sherwood Park's prayer times are worked out

From Sherwood Park, the Qibla is 25° from true north. Face northeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 11,291 km (7,016 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Sherwood Park's own coordinates (53.52°N, 113.32°W), not a national average. That is why Sherwood Park's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Sherwood Park timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Sherwood Park lies well west inside its Edmonton time zone. So the sun peaks about 102 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 1:18 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 18h 02m near June down to 9h 18m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Sherwood Park come from the Islamic Society of North America. The ISNA method sets Fajr when the sun is 15° below the horizon, and Isha at 15°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Edmonton, St. Albert and Red Deer. Each is only a few minutes off Sherwood Park's clock.
