How Fort McMurray's prayer times are worked out

From Fort McMurray, the Qibla is 27° from true north. Face northeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 10,917 km (6,783 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Fort McMurray's own coordinates (56.73°N, 111.38°W), not a national average. That is why Fort McMurray's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Fort McMurray timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Fort McMurray lies well west inside its Edmonton time zone. So the sun peaks about 94 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 1:11 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 18h 42m near June down to 8h 50m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Fort McMurray come from the Islamic Society of North America. The ISNA method sets Fajr when the sun is 15° below the horizon, and Isha at 15°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby St. Albert, Edmonton and Sherwood Park. Each is only a few minutes off Fort McMurray's clock.
