How Cedar Rapids's prayer times are worked out

From Cedar Rapids, the Qibla is 46° from true north. Face northeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 11,383 km (7,073 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Cedar Rapids's own coordinates (41.98°N, 91.67°W), not a national average. That is why Cedar Rapids's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Cedar Rapids timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Cedar Rapids lies well west inside its Chicago time zone. So the sun peaks about 75 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 12:52 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 16h 59m near June down to 10h 31m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Cedar Rapids come from the Islamic Society of North America. The ISNA method sets Fajr when the sun is 15° below the horizon, and Isha at 15°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Iowa City, Des Moines and Madison. Each is only a few minutes off Cedar Rapids's clock.
