Des Moines's times use the ISNA method. That is the standard used by most mosques in Iowa and across the United States. They are drawn from Des Moines's own coordinates (41.5868°N, 93.6250°W). The schedule updates automatically at midnight, with no manual setting.

How Des Moines's prayer times are worked out

From Des Moines, the Qibla is 44° from true north. Face northeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 11,528 km (7,163 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Des Moines's own coordinates (41.59°N, 93.63°W), not a national average. That is why Des Moines's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Des Moines timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Des Moines lies well west inside its Chicago time zone. So the sun peaks about 83 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 1:00 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 16h 54m near June down to 10h 34m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Des Moines come from the Islamic Society of North America. The ISNA method sets Fajr when the sun is 15° below the horizon, and Isha at 15°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Omaha. Each is only a few minutes off Des Moines's clock.
