How Ottawa South's prayer times are worked out

From Ottawa South, the Qibla is 57° from true north. Face northeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 10,145 km (6,304 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Ottawa South's own coordinates (45.39°N, 75.69°W), not a national average. That is why Ottawa South's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Ottawa South timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Ottawa South lies well west inside its Toronto time zone. So the sun peaks about 71 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 12:48 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 17h 40m near June down to 10h 13m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Ottawa South come from the Islamic Society of North America. The ISNA method sets Fajr when the sun is 15° below the horizon, and Isha at 15°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Ottawa, Hull and Gloucester. Each is only a few minutes off Ottawa South's clock.
