How East Hastings's prayer times are worked out

From East Hastings, the Qibla is 17° from true north. Face north to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 11,974 km (7,440 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from East Hastings's own coordinates (49.27°N, 123.06°W), not a national average. That is why East Hastings's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the East Hastings timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. East Hastings lies well west inside its Vancouver time zone. So the sun peaks about 81 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 12:57 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 17h 22m near June down to 9h 49m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for East Hastings come from the Islamic Society of North America. The ISNA method sets Fajr when the sun is 15° below the horizon, and Isha at 15°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Renfrew-Collingwood, Vancouver and Downtown Vancouver. Each is only a few minutes off East Hastings's clock.
