How Willowdale East's prayer times are worked out

From Willowdale East, the Qibla is 55° from true north. Face northeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 10,489 km (6,518 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Willowdale East's own coordinates (43.77°N, 79.40°W), not a national average. That is why Willowdale East's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Willowdale East timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Willowdale East lies well west inside its Toronto time zone. So the sun peaks about 86 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 1:03 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 17h 18m near June down to 10h 22m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Willowdale East come from the Islamic Society of North America. The ISNA method sets Fajr when the sun is 15° below the horizon, and Isha at 15°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Willowdale, Vaughan and Richmond Hill. Each is only a few minutes off Willowdale East's clock.
