Six centuries of Lithuanian Islam
Lithuania has one of Europe's oldest continuous Muslim communities, the Lipka Tatars. These Turkic Muslims were invited into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by Vytautas the Great in the late 14th century. They settled around Vilnius, Trakai and Kaunas. They are Sunni of the Hanafi school. This page applies the Muslim World League calculation (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°) to the city's own coordinates. Lithuania keeps Central-Eastern European time (UTC+2, and UTC+3 in summer). At Lithuania's northern latitude the summer fast runs very long and the winter one is short.
The Kaunas Mosque
The brick Kaunas Mosque was built between 1930 and 1933 with the aid of the Lithuanian state. It was raised to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Vytautas the Great, the ruler who first settled the Tatars. It is the only masonry mosque in Lithuania and the Baltic states.
