How Timbuktu's prayer times are worked out

From Timbuktu, the Qibla is 76° from true north. Face east to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 4,517 km (2,807 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Timbuktu's own coordinates (16.77°N, 3.01°W), not a national average. That is why Timbuktu's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Timbuktu timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Timbuktu lies well west inside its Bamako time zone. So the sun peaks about 20 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 12:10 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 14h 30m near June down to 12h 25m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Timbuktu come from the Muslim World League. The Muslim World League method sets Fajr when the sun is 18° below the horizon, and Isha at 17°.
