How South Surrey's prayer times are worked out

From South Surrey, the Qibla is 17° from true north. Face north to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 11,992 km (7,451 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from South Surrey's own coordinates (49.05°N, 122.79°W), not a national average. That is why South Surrey's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the South Surrey timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. South Surrey lies well west inside its Vancouver time zone. So the sun peaks about 80 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 12:56 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 17h 19m near June down to 9h 51m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for South Surrey come from the Islamic Society of North America. The ISNA method sets Fajr when the sun is 15° below the horizon, and Isha at 15°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Surrey, Cloverdale and Newton. Each is only a few minutes off South Surrey's clock.
