Prayer Times in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt

Prayer times in Sharm el-Sheikh are worked out each day from the city's coordinates (27.92°N). We use the Egyptian method, the one followed across Egypt. The five times shift by a minute or two each day as the sun moves. The full month is listed below.

Sharm el-Sheikh's times use the Egyptian method. That is the standard followed by most mosques in Egypt. They are drawn from Sharm el-Sheikh's own coordinates (27.9158°N, 34.3300°E). The schedule updates automatically at midnight, with no manual setting.

How Sharm el-Sheikh's prayer times are worked out

From Sharm el-Sheikh, the Qibla is 141° from true north. Face southeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 911 km (566 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Sharm el-Sheikh's own coordinates (27.92°N, 34.33°E), not a national average. That is why Sharm el-Sheikh's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

Day length is what moves the Sharm el-Sheikh timetable through the year. With the Egyptian method, the longest daily fast — Fajr to Maghrib — runs about 15h 37m around June. It eases to 11h 53m by December. That is a 3h 44m swing, set by the city's latitude of 27.92°N. The farther a place sits from the equator, the wider the gap.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Sharm el-Sheikh come from the Egyptian General Authority of Survey. The Egyptian method sets Fajr when the sun is 19.5° below the horizon, and Isha at 17.5°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. Sharm el-Sheikh sits east of its Cairo meridian. The sun peaks about 9 minutes before noon, so Dhuhr today is 12:41 PM. We also publish times for nearby Hurghada, Safaga and Aqaba. Each is only a few minutes off Sharm el-Sheikh's clock.

Who sets prayer times in Egypt

Egypt's prayer times follow the standard of the Egyptian General Authority of Survey: Fajr 19.5°, Isha 17.5°. That is the method used on this page, and one of the oldest official calculation standards in the Muslim world. The Ministry of Awqaf administers mosques and imams, while Al-Azhar and Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyya carry the religious authority. Egypt is unusual in how centrally its mosques are run. The Ministry of Awqaf unified the Friday khutbah, so imams across the country deliver a sermon on a single ministry-set topic. The ministry publishes the text.

Cairo's mosques and the four schools

Egypt does not have one dominant madhab, and it is worth saying so plainly. Shafi'i has historically been strongest in Lower Egypt, and Maliki in Upper Egypt. Hanafi carries official and state standing inherited from the Ottoman period. Al-Azhar deliberately teaches all four Sunni schools. The mosques trace that whole history. The Mosque of Amr ibn al-As in Fustat, built in 641, was the first mosque in Egypt and among the first in Africa. Al-Azhar Mosque was completed in 972 under the Fatimids, the first mosque of Cairo itself. It grew into the institution that still anchors Sunni scholarship today.
