Mogadishu's coral mosques
Mogadishu's old town holds one of the oldest mosques on the East African coast. The Fakhr al-Din Mosque in Hamar Weyne is dated by inscription to 1269 and attributed to Sultan Fakhr al-Din. It is built from coral block, with a marble mihrab. It is a reminder of the medieval sultanate that made the city an Indian Ocean trading power. The modern era answers it across town. The Mosque of Islamic Solidarity was built in 1987 with Saudi funding and holds some ten thousand worshippers. It is often cited as one of the largest mosques in the Horn of Africa.
