Prayer Times in Romford, United Kingdom

Prayer times in Romford are worked out each day from the city's coordinates (51.58°N). We use the Muslim World League method, the one followed across the United Kingdom. The five times shift by a minute or two each day as the sun moves. The full month is listed below.

Romford's times use the Muslim World League method. That is the standard followed by most mosques in United Kingdom. They are drawn from Romford's own coordinates (51.5752°N, 0.1858°E). The schedule updates automatically at midnight, with no manual setting.

How Romford's prayer times are worked out

From Romford, the Qibla is 119° from true north. Face southeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 4,779 km (2,969 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Romford's own coordinates (51.58°N, 0.19°E), not a national average. That is why Romford's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

Day length is what moves the Romford timetable through the year. With the Muslim World League method, the longest daily fast — Fajr to Maghrib — runs about 17h 43m around June. It eases to 9h 54m by December. That is a 7h 49m swing, set by the city's latitude of 51.58°N. The farther a place sits from the equator, the wider the gap.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Romford come from the Muslim World League. The Muslim World League method sets Fajr when the sun is 18° below the horizon, and Isha at 17°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. Romford sits west of its London meridian. The sun peaks about 8 minutes after noon, so Dhuhr today is 12:58 PM. We also publish times for nearby Dagenham, Becontree and Ilford. Each is only a few minutes off Romford's clock.

Two Asr times are in use in the United Kingdom

UK mosques are split. Deobandi and Barelvi mosques, the majority, follow the Hanafi Asr. Arab, Salafi and African mosques use the earlier standard time. Many UK timetables print both. The time shown above for Romford is the standard reckoning — 4:30 PM. The Hanafi time today is 5:24 PM. Follow whichever your mosque announces; you can make Hanafi the default in the settings above.

Who sets prayer times in the UK

There is no national authority: every British mosque sets its own timetable. In London most of the major mosques follow the Unified Prayer Timetable for London. They agreed it among themselves and adopted it from Ramadan 2011. Users include the Islamic Cultural Centre and London Central Mosque, the East London Mosque and Muslim Welfare House. Outside London, mosques generally use Muslim World League angles (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°), the basis this page applies. This is why two mosques a few miles apart can print different times. It is worth checking your own mosque's timetable, rather than assuming a single national answer exists.

The Asr split in British mosques

Britain's Asr time depends on which mosque you attend, and the split is real. The most recent mosque census counted nearly 2,000 active British masjids. Deobandi and Barelvi mosques are both Hanafi, and together around two thirds of that total. They call Asr on the second-shadow rule. Arab, Salafi, Somali and West African mosques use the earlier standard time. Many British timetables print both columns for exactly this reason, and so does this page. Three landmarks stand out. London Central Mosque in Regent's Park was designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd and completed in 1977. The East London Mosque in Whitechapel opened its current building in 1985, and was among the first in Britain permitted to broadcast the adhan aloud. Birmingham Central Mosque was built in 1969.

Because British mosques follow different schools. Deobandi and Barelvi mosques make up roughly two thirds of UK masjids, and they use the Hanafi Asr. It begins when an object's shadow is twice its length, about 75 minutes later than the standard reckoning used by Arab, Salafi and African mosques.
