Prayer Times in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Prayer times in Riyadh are worked out each day from the city's coordinates (24.71°N). We use the Umm al-Qura method, the one followed across Saudi Arabia. The five times shift by a minute or two each day as the sun moves. The full month is listed below.

Riyadh's times use the Umm al-Qura method. That is the standard followed by most mosques in Saudi Arabia. They are drawn from Riyadh's own coordinates (24.7136°N, 46.6753°E). The schedule updates automatically at midnight, with no manual setting.

How Riyadh's prayer times are worked out

From Riyadh, the Qibla is 244° from true north. Face southwest to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 790 km (491 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Riyadh's own coordinates (24.71°N, 46.68°E), not a national average. That is why Riyadh's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

Day length is what moves the Riyadh timetable through the year. With the Umm al-Qura method, the longest daily fast — Fajr to Maghrib — runs about 15h 12m around June. It eases to 12h 00m by December. That is a 3h 12m swing, set by the city's latitude of 24.71°N. The farther a place sits from the equator, the wider the gap.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Riyadh come from Umm al-Qura University, Makkah. The Umm al-Qura method sets Fajr when the sun is 18.5° below the horizon, and Isha 90 minutes after Maghrib. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. Riyadh sits close to its Riyadh meridian, so Dhuhr lands near midday — 11:58 AM today. We also publish times for nearby Ad Dir‘īyah, Al Kharj and Ad Dawādimī. Each is only a few minutes off Riyadh's clock.

Who sets prayer times in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's official times come from the Umm al-Qura calendar. It is administered by the Institute of Astronomical and Geophysical Research, at King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology in Riyadh. Its method is distinctive. Fajr is calculated at 18.5° below the horizon, but Isha is not an angle at all. It is fixed at 90 minutes after Maghrib, extended to 120 minutes during Ramadan. This page uses that Umm al-Qura convention. The dominant school is Hanbali, so Asr is called at the first shadow rather than the later Hanafi second-shadow time. The Eastern Province has a historic Maliki presence, which shares the same first-shadow Asr.

The two holiest mosques on earth

No country carries the weight in Islam that Saudi Arabia does. Masjid al-Haram in Mecca encloses the Kaaba. That is the qibla every one of the world's Muslims turns toward for all five daily prayers, from every city on this site. It is also the focal point of the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. Al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina, the Prophet's Mosque, is the second-holiest site in Islam. Built by the Prophet Muhammad in 622 CE, its Green Dome rises over his tomb. Prayer in these two mosques carries a reward described in the hadith as many times that of prayer elsewhere. That is why they draw worshippers from across the planet year-round.

Mosques in Riyadh

Mosques in and around Riyadh include جامع و مسجد الامام محمد ابن عبدالوهاب, جامع علي بن أبي طالب, Mosque, جامع العقاريه, مسجد الشيخ عبدالعزيز بن بدر العسكر and جامع الشويعر. The times on this page are worked out from Riyadh's own coordinates, and they apply across these mosques. Check the exact iqama time with your local mosque. That is the congregation, called a few minutes after each prayer starts.
