Austria recognised Islam by law in 1912, one of the first Western states to do so. The Islamgesetz, passed after the annexation of Bosnia, explicitly recognised the Hanafi rite. The Vienna Islamic Centre in Floridsdorf was financed at King Faisal's pledge and inaugurated in 1979 by Austria's federal president.
