Prayer Times in Muscat, Oman

Prayer times in Muscat are worked out each day from the city's coordinates (23.58°N). We use the Umm al-Qura method, the one followed across Oman. The five times shift by a minute or two each day as the sun moves. The full month is listed below.

Muscat's times use the Umm al-Qura method. That is the standard followed by most mosques in Oman. They are drawn from Muscat's own coordinates (23.5841°N, 58.4078°E). The schedule updates automatically at midnight, with no manual setting.

How Muscat's prayer times are worked out

From Muscat, the Qibla is 266° from true north. Face west to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 1,923 km (1,195 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Muscat's own coordinates (23.58°N, 58.41°E), not a national average. That is why Muscat's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Muscat timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Muscat lies well west inside its Muscat time zone. So the sun peaks about 14 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 12:04 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 15h 06m near June down to 12h 04m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Muscat come from Umm al-Qura University, Makkah. The Umm al-Qura method sets Fajr when the sun is 18.5° below the horizon, and Isha 90 minutes after Maghrib. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Bawshar, Seeb and Barkā’. Each is only a few minutes off Muscat's clock.

Prayer times in the Ibadi sultanate

Oman is the world's only Ibadi-majority country. Ibadism is a school older than the four Sunni madhabs, known for its scholarly restraint. The Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs administers mosques and the Ramadan calendar. This page uses the Umm al-Qura family of parameters applied to this city's own coordinates, consistent with Gulf convention. Oman keeps UTC+4 year-round, with no daylight saving. Its position on the edge of the Tropic of Cancer keeps day length moderate. Summer Fajr comes early, but never at the extremes northern countries see.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the mountain mosques

Muscat's Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque opened in 2001 and is among the great modern mosques of the world. It is famous for its vast single-piece prayer carpet and its Swarovski-crystal chandelier, and it is open to non-Muslim visitors most mornings. Beyond the capital, Oman's interior tells an older story. The mudbrick mosques of Nizwa and the falaj-watered oasis towns carry the Ibadi imamate's heritage. Salalah, in the far south, catches the khareef monsoon — the only corner of Arabia with a green rainy season.

Mosques in Muscat

Mosques in and around Muscat include مسجد الرحمة, مسجد الهدى, جامع الغبرة الشمالية, مسجد معلم حسن, جامع محمد الأمين and مسجد أولاد سويد. That is the congregation, called a few minutes after each prayer starts.
