Prayer Times in Manchester, United Kingdom

Manchesterprayer times are calculated based on the city's precise geographic coordinates (53.4808°N, 2.2426°W) using the Muslim World League calculation method — the standard followed by most mosques in United Kingdom. Times shown are for today's date and update automatically at midnight.

The five daily prayers — Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha — are calculated from the sun's position relative to Manchester's latitude and longitude. As the sun's declination changes throughout the year, prayer times shift by several minutes each day. This is why a Manchester prayer time calendar for the full month is shown below — so you can plan ahead without checking daily.

How Manchester's prayer times are worked out

Manchester sits 5,025 km (3,122 miles) from the Kaaba in Mecca, so the Qibla from here is 118° from true north — you face southeast to pray. Fajr and Isha depend on how far the sun drops below the horizon, and United Kingdom follows the Muslim World League method set by the Muslim World League: Fajr begins when the sun is 18° below the horizon, and Isha when it reaches 17°. A city that used ISNA's 15° instead would get a noticeably different Fajr — which is why the method, not just the coordinates, decides the answer.

Day length is what really moves the timetable in Manchester. Measured with the Muslim World League method, the longest daily fast here — from Fajr to Maghrib — runs about 18h 02m around June, while the shortest is roughly 9h 40m in December: a swing of 8h 22m across the year. That spread is set by Manchester's latitude (53.48°N); cities nearer the equator barely vary, while far-northern ones swing by many hours.

One local quirk worth knowing: Dhuhr in Manchester does not fall at 12:00. Because the city sits well west within its Europe/London time zone, the sun peaks about 17 minutes after clock noon, and Dhuhr follows the sun rather than the clock — today it is at 1:16 PM. The nearest cities we also publish times for are Salford, Stockport, Oldham — close enough that their times differ from Manchester's by only a few minutes.

Two Asr times are in use in the United Kingdom

UK mosques are split: Deobandi and Barelvi mosques — the majority — follow the Hanafi Asr, while Arab, Salafi and African mosques use the earlier standard time. Many UK timetables print both. The time shown above for Manchester is the standard reckoning — 5:36 PM. The Hanafi time today is 6:48 PM. Follow whichever your mosque announces; you can make Hanafi the default in the settings above.

Who sets prayer times in the UK

There is no national authority: every British mosque sets its own timetable. In London most of the major mosques follow the Unified Prayer Timetable for London, agreed among them and adopted from Ramadan 2011 — the Islamic Cultural Centre and London Central Mosque, the East London Mosque, Muslim Welfare House and others use it. Outside London, mosques generally use Muslim World League angles (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°), the basis this page applies. This is why two mosques a few miles apart can print different times, and why it is worth checking your own mosque's timetable rather than assuming a single national answer exists.

The Asr split in British mosques

Britain's Asr time depends on which mosque you attend, and the split is real. In the most recent mosque census of nearly 2,000 active British masjids, Deobandi and Barelvi mosques — both Hanafi, and together around two thirds of the total — call Asr on the second-shadow rule. Arab, Salafi, Somali and West African mosques use the earlier standard time. Many British timetables print both columns for exactly this reason, and so does this page. Among the landmarks: London Central Mosque in Regent's Park, designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd and completed in 1977; the East London Mosque in Whitechapel, whose current building opened in 1985 and which was among the first in Britain permitted to broadcast the adhan aloud; and Birmingham Central Mosque, built in 1969.

Why do UK mosques show different Asr times?

Because British mosques follow different schools. Deobandi and Barelvi mosques — roughly two thirds of UK masjids — use the Hanafi Asr, which begins when an object's shadow is twice its length, about 75 minutes later than the standard reckoning used by Arab, Salafi and African mosques. There is no national authority to settle it, so many UK timetables simply print both. This page shows both times.

Which calculation method is used for Manchester prayer times?

Manchester uses the Muslim World League method, followed by the Muslim World League. Fajr starts when the sun is 18° below the horizon, and Isha when it reaches 17°. You can switch methods above if your local mosque follows a different convention.
