Prayer Times in Leuven, Belgium

Prayer times in Leuven are worked out each day from the city's coordinates (50.88°N). We use the Muslim World League method, the one followed across Belgium. The five times shift by a minute or two each day as the sun moves. The full month is listed below.

Leuven's times use the Muslim World League method. That is the standard followed by most mosques in Belgium. They are drawn from Leuven's own coordinates (50.8796°N, 4.7009°E). The schedule updates automatically at midnight, with no manual setting.

How Leuven's prayer times are worked out

From Leuven, the Qibla is 124° from true north. Face southeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 4,470 km (2,778 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Leuven's own coordinates (50.88°N, 4.70°E), not a national average. That is why Leuven's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Leuven timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Leuven lies well west inside its Brussels time zone. So the sun peaks about 50 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 1:40 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 17h 36m near June down to 9h 58m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Leuven come from the Muslim World League. The Muslim World League method sets Fajr when the sun is 18° below the horizon, and Isha at 17°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Mechelen and Schaerbeek. Each is only a few minutes off Leuven's clock.

The EMB timetable: Belgium's official times

Belgium is rare in Western Europe: it has an official interlocutor that actually publishes prayer times. The Executive of Muslims of Belgium (EMB) is the state-recognised body for a faith Belgium formally recognised in 1974. It issues downloadable annual timetables and announces Ramadan through its Council of Theologians. This page applies the Muslim World League calculation (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°) to the city's own coordinates. That sits close to the EMB tables for most of the year. The community itself is two-rooted. Moroccan-origin Muslims (300,000+) are concentrated in Brussels and Wallonia; Turkish-origin Muslims (160,000+) are strongest in Ghent and Antwerp. Together they are roughly 6-8% of the country, though Belgium keeps no religious census.

The Great Mosque of the Cinquantenaire

Brussels' Great Mosque tells Belgium's story with Islam in one building. It began as a nineteenth-century exhibition pavilion in the Parc du Cinquantenaire. Belgium leased it to Saudi Arabia in 1967, and it was inaugurated as a mosque in 1978. Belgium ended the Saudi concession in 2018, and management passed to the EMB. Beyond the capital, Antwerp and Ghent have Turkish mosques and Wallonia has Moroccan ones. That makes Belgium's Islam bilingual twice over — in French and Dutch, and in Maliki and Hanafi practice. Clocks change with the EU on the last Sundays of March and October, jumping Maghrib by an hour each time.

Mosques in Leuven

Mosques in and around Leuven include IMSAL, Moskee Al Fath and Al Ihsaan Moskee. The times on this page are worked out from Leuven's own coordinates, and they apply across these mosques. Check the exact iqama time with your local mosque. That is the congregation, called a few minutes after each prayer starts.
