Prayer Times in Kulim, Malaysia

Kulimprayer times are calculated based on the city's precise geographic coordinates (5.3650°N, 100.5618°E) using the JAKIM calculation method — the standard followed by most mosques in Malaysia. Times shown are for today's date and update automatically at midnight.

The five daily prayers — Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha — are calculated from the sun's position relative to Kulim's latitude and longitude. As the sun's declination changes throughout the year, prayer times shift by several minutes each day. This is why a Kulim prayer time calendar for the full month is shown below — so you can plan ahead without checking daily.

How Kulim's prayer times are worked out

Kulim sits 6,765 km (4,204 miles) from the Kaaba in Mecca, so the Qibla from here is 292° from true north — you face west to pray. Fajr and Isha depend on how far the sun drops below the horizon, and Malaysia follows the JAKIM method set by JAKIM, Malaysia's federal Islamic authority: Fajr begins when the sun is 20° below the horizon, and Isha when it reaches 18°. A city that used ISNA's 15° instead would get a noticeably different Fajr — which is why the method, not just the coordinates, decides the answer.

Day length is what really moves the timetable in Kulim. Measured with the JAKIM method, the longest daily fast here — from Fajr to Maghrib — runs about 13h 52m around June, while the shortest is roughly 13h 12m in December: a swing of 0h 40m across the year. That spread is set by Kulim's latitude (5.37°N); cities nearer the equator barely vary, while far-northern ones swing by many hours.

One local quirk worth knowing: Dhuhr in Kulim does not fall at 12:00. Because the city sits well west within its Asia/Kuala Lumpur time zone, the sun peaks about 86 minutes after clock noon, and Dhuhr follows the sun rather than the clock — today it is at 1:25 PM. The nearest cities we also publish times for are Bukit Mertajam, Bukit Tengah, Tasek Glugor — close enough that their times differ from Kulim's by only a few minutes.

JAKIM, e-Solat and Malaysia's prayer zones

Malaysia's official prayer times come from JAKIM — Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia, the Department of Islamic Development under the Prime Minister's Department — published through the e-Solat portal. Its method uses Fajr 20° and Isha 18°, which is what this page applies, and its criteria are set according to the school of Imam Shafi'i, the officially recognised madhab. Malaysia does not publish a single national timetable. Instead JAKIM divides the country into prayer-time zones, each with a code (Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya fall under WLY01), and every district maps to a zone with its own times. State religious councils such as JAIS in Selangor hold jurisdiction at state level.

The national mosques

Masjid Negara, the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur, was completed in 1965 and holds 15,000 worshippers, its folded-plate roof a deliberate break from domed convention. The Putra Mosque in Putrajaya, finished in 1999 and clad in rose-tinted granite, seats another 15,000 beside the lake. The largest in the country is the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque in Shah Alam — the "Blue Mosque" — completed in 1988 and able to hold up to 24,000.

Because JAKIM issues times by zone rather than nationally.
