Prayer Times in East Jerusalem, Palestine

Prayer times in East Jerusalem are worked out each day from the city's coordinates (31.78°N). We use the Muslim World League method, the one followed across Palestine. The five times shift by a minute or two each day as the sun moves. The full month is listed below.

East Jerusalem's times use the Muslim World League method. That is the standard followed by most mosques in Palestine. They are drawn from East Jerusalem's own coordinates (31.7834°N, 35.2339°E). The schedule updates automatically at midnight, with no manual setting.

How East Jerusalem's prayer times are worked out

From East Jerusalem, the Qibla is 157° from true north. Face southeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 1,239 km (770 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from East Jerusalem's own coordinates (31.78°N, 35.23°E), not a national average. That is why East Jerusalem's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the East Jerusalem timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. East Jerusalem lies well east inside its Hebron time zone. So the sun peaks about 12 minutes before clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 12:37 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 15h 54m near June down to 11h 31m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for East Jerusalem come from the Muslim World League. The Muslim World League method sets Fajr when the sun is 18° below the horizon, and Isha at 17°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Ramallah, Battir and Hebron. Each is only a few minutes off East Jerusalem's clock.

Prayer times in Palestine

Palestinians are overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim, predominantly of the Shafi'i school with a Hanafi presence inherited from Ottoman times. This page applies the Muslim World League calculation (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°) to the city's own coordinates. It runs on the Eastern European clock (UTC+2, and UTC+3 in summer) kept across the territories. Local mosques announce the standard first-shadow Asr shown here.

Al-Aqsa — the third holy place and the first qibla

Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa compound (al-Haram al-Sharif) is the third holiest site in Islam, for Sunni and Shia alike. It was also Islam's first qibla, the direction Muslims faced in prayer before it turned to Mecca. The walled esplanade holds the silver-domed Qibli Mosque and the golden Dome of the Rock. That octagonal shrine marks the site of the Prophet's Night Journey and Ascension. The compound's religious affairs are administered by the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf. Prayer everywhere still turns toward Mecca, and this page gives the Qibla bearing for each Palestinian city. But Al-Aqsa's place in Muslim devotion is singular.
