Prayer Times in Darwin, Australia

Prayer times in Darwin are worked out each day from the city's coordinates (12.46°S). We use the Muslim World League method, the one followed across Australia. The five times shift by a minute or two each day as the sun moves. The full month is listed below.

Darwin's times use the Muslim World League method. That is the standard followed by most mosques in Australia. They are drawn from Darwin's own coordinates (12.4611°S, 130.8418°E). The schedule updates automatically at midnight, with no manual setting.

How Darwin's prayer times are worked out

From Darwin, the Qibla is 291° from true north. Face west to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 10,613 km (6,595 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Darwin's own coordinates (12.46°S, 130.84°E), not a national average. That is why Darwin's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Darwin timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Darwin lies well west inside its Darwin time zone. So the sun peaks about 55 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 12:45 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 14h 10m near December down to 12h 39m in June.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Darwin come from the Muslim World League. The Muslim World League method sets Fajr when the sun is 18° below the horizon, and Isha at 17°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Atambua, Tual and Kupang. Each is only a few minutes off Darwin's clock.

Two Asr times are in use in Australia

Australian mosques are split: Turkish and South Asian mosques follow the Hanafi Asr (second shadow), while Arab and Lebanese mosques use the earlier standard time. Many timetables show both. The time shown above for Darwin is the standard reckoning — 4:05 PM. The Hanafi time today is 5:03 PM. Follow whichever your mosque announces; you can make Hanafi the default in the settings above.

Who sets prayer times in Australia

Australia has no national prayer-time authority. The Australian National Imams Council is the peak body of imams, but it does not issue a single national timetable. State imams councils and individual mosques publish their own. Most use Muslim World League angles (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°), the basis this page applies, though some communities follow Egyptian or ISNA conventions. The country's Muslim population is a mosaic of immigrant communities: Lebanese and Arab, Turkish, and South Asian. There is no single dominant school. That is exactly why the Asr time depends on which mosque you attend.

The Asr split, and a continent-sized spread of times

Australia's Asr time genuinely depends on your community. Turkish mosques following the Diyanet tradition, and South Asian mosques, call Asr on the Hanafi second-shadow rule. That is about 75 minutes later than the standard reckoning used by Arab and Lebanese mosques. Many Australian timetables simply print both, and so does this page. Two landmarks stand out. The Auburn Gallipoli Mosque in Sydney opened in 1999 in Ottoman style. The Lakemba Mosque was completed in 1977, and is among the country's largest. Australia also spans three time zones and a huge range of latitudes, from the tropics to Tasmania. Prayer times can differ by up to two hours across the country. A national timetable simply isn't possible, which is why times are always city-level.

Darwin Prayer Times — FAQ

What direction is Qibla from Darwin?

The Qibla direction from Darwin, Australia is 291° from true north. Face west toward Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which lies 10,613 km (6,595 miles) away.

How long is the fast in Darwin?

The longest daily fast in Darwin is about 14h 10m, around December. The shortest is about 12h 39m, in June. That is a swing of 1h 31m across the year, set by the city's latitude of 12.46°S. Both are measured from Fajr to Maghrib with the Muslim World League method.

Why do Australian mosques show different Asr times?

Because Australia's Muslim communities follow different schools. Turkish and South Asian mosques use the Hanafi Asr. It begins when an object's shadow is twice its length, about 75 minutes later than the standard reckoning used by Arab and Lebanese mosques. There is no national authority to settle it, so many timetables print both. This page shows both times.
