Prayer Times in Dakar, Senegal

Prayer times in Dakar are worked out each day from the city's coordinates (14.69°N). We use the Muslim World League method, the one followed across Senegal. The five times shift by a minute or two each day as the sun moves. The full month is listed below.

Dakar's times use the Muslim World League method. That is the standard followed by most mosques in Senegal. They are drawn from Dakar's own coordinates (14.6937°N, 17.4441°W). The schedule updates automatically at midnight, with no manual setting.

How Dakar's prayer times are worked out

From Dakar, the Qibla is 74° from true north. Face east to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 6,069 km (3,771 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Dakar's own coordinates (14.69°N, 17.44°W), not a national average. That is why Dakar's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

One local quirk shapes the Dakar timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Dakar lies well west inside its Dakar time zone. So the sun peaks about 78 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 1:08 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 14h 20m near June down to 12h 33m in December.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Dakar come from the Muslim World League. The Muslim World League method sets Fajr when the sun is 18° below the horizon, and Isha at 17°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Pikine, Guédiawaye and Rufisque. Each is only a few minutes off Dakar's clock.

The country of the brotherhoods

Senegal is about 97% Muslim and practises Islam like nowhere else. Nearly all Senegalese Muslims belong to a Sufi order — a higher share than any Muslim population in the world. The Tijaniyya count the most adherents; the Mourides are the most tightly organised. Ramadan and Korité dates are fixed nationally by CONACOC, the moon-sighting commission that works with imams and the religious families. Daily times come from mosques. This page applies the Muslim World League calculation (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°) to the city's own coordinates. One quirk matters here. Dakar sits at 17.4°W on a GMT clock, so solar noon comes about seventy minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib all fall late by the clock, and this page's per-city calculation captures that exactly.

Touba: Africa's great pilgrimage city

The Great Mosque of Touba was completed in 1963 above the tomb of Mouride founder Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, its central minaret rising 96 metres. Touba is the spiritual capital of Senegal. Once a year the Grand Magal pilgrimage turns the city into one of the largest gatherings in the Muslim world. Organisers report over six million pilgrims. Dakar answered in 2019 with Massalikoul Djinane, a Mouride-financed mosque often described as West Africa's largest. Its five 80-metre minarets are visible across the capital. Faith here is public, sung, and processional — and it runs on the same five times this page computes.

Mosques in Dakar

Mosques in and around Dakar include Mosquée Abdou Rahman Diop, Mosquée Rue 40, Mosquée Serigne Touba, Mosquée de la Gendarmerie, Mosquée Colobane and Serigne Ababacar sy. The times on this page are worked out from Dakar's own coordinates, and they apply across these mosques. Check the exact iqama time with your local mosque. That is the congregation, called a few minutes after each prayer starts.

Dakar Prayer Times — FAQ

What direction is Qibla from Dakar?

The Qibla direction from Dakar, Senegal is 74° from true north. Face east toward Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which lies 6,069 km (3,771 miles) away.

How long is the fast in Dakar?

The longest daily fast in Dakar is about 14h 20m, around June. The shortest is about 12h 33m, in December. That is a swing of 1h 47m across the year, set by the city's latitude of 14.69°N. Both are measured from Fajr to Maghrib with the Muslim World League method.

Why do prayer times in Senegal feel late by the clock?

Because Senegal keeps GMT while sitting far west of the Greenwich meridian — Dakar at 17.4°W sees solar noon about seventy minutes after 12:00. Every sun-based time shifts with it, so Dhuhr near 13:10 and a late Maghrib are normal. This page calculates from this city's own longitude, so the shift is already built in.
