Prayer Times in Bokāro, India

Bokāroprayer times are calculated based on the city's precise geographic coordinates (23.6693°N, 86.1516°E) using the Karachi calculation method — the standard followed by most mosques in India. Times shown are for today's date and update automatically at midnight.

The five daily prayers — Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha — are calculated from the sun's position relative to Bokāro's latitude and longitude. As the sun's declination changes throughout the year, prayer times shift by several minutes each day. This is why a Bokāro prayer time calendar for the full month is shown below — so you can plan ahead without checking daily.

How Bokāro's prayer times are worked out

Bokāro sits 4,743 km (2,947 miles) from the Kaaba in Mecca, so the Qibla from here is 276° from true north — you face west to pray. Fajr and Isha depend on how far the sun drops below the horizon, and India follows the Karachi method set by the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi: Fajr begins when the sun is 18° below the horizon, and Isha when it reaches 18°. A city that used ISNA's 15° instead would get a noticeably different Fajr — which is why the method, not just the coordinates, decides the answer.

Day length is what really moves the timetable in Bokāro. Measured with the Karachi method, the longest daily fast here — from Fajr to Maghrib — runs about 15h 04m around June, while the shortest is roughly 12h 02m in December: a swing of 3h 02m across the year. That spread is set by Bokāro's latitude (23.67°N); cities nearer the equator barely vary, while far-northern ones swing by many hours.

Bokāro sits close to the meridian of its Asia/Kolkata time zone, so the sun peaks within 6 minutes of clock noon and Dhuhr lands near midday — today at 11:53 AM. Dhuhr always tracks the sun's peak, not the clock. The nearest cities we also publish times for are Chas, Phusro, Kātrās — close enough that their times differ from Bokāro's by only a few minutes.

Two Asr times are in use in India

Most Indian mosques follow the Hanafi Asr (second shadow), though Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are largely Shafi'i and use the earlier standard time. The time shown above for Bokāro is the standard reckoning — 3:12 PM. The Hanafi time today is 4:31 PM. Follow whichever your mosque announces; you can make Hanafi the default in the settings above.

Who sets prayer times in India

India is a secular state and no government body issues prayer timetables. In practice each mosque committee publishes its own, and the widely used calculation basis across the subcontinent is the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method (Fajr 18°, Isha 18°) — the method this page uses. State Waqf Boards, advised by the Central Waqf Council, administer mosque property rather than prayer times, and moon-sighting decisions rest with committees and seminaries rather than a single national office.

The Asr split — and why it is regional

India's Asr time genuinely depends on where you are. Sunni Muslims across most of the subcontinent are Hanafi, so mosques call Asr on the second-shadow rule — about 75 minutes later than the standard reckoning. But the Malabar coast is different: the Mappila Muslims of Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are predominantly Shafi'i, and their timetables use the earlier, first-shadow Asr. Many Indian mosques simply print both. This page shows the standard Asr with the Hanafi time alongside, so you can match whichever your mosque follows. India's great mosques span that same breadth: Delhi's Jama Masjid, completed in 1656 under Shah Jahan; Bhopal's Taj-ul-Masajid, India's largest, finished in 1985; and Hyderabad's Mecca Masjid, begun in 1614 and completed in 1694, which takes its name from bricks made with soil brought from Mecca and set into its central arch.
