Prayer Times in Bern, Switzerland
Prayer times in Bern are worked out each day from the city's coordinates (46.95°N). We use the Muslim World League method, the one followed across Switzerland. The five times shift by a minute or two each day as the sun moves. The full month is listed below.
Bern's times use the Muslim World League method. That is the standard followed by most mosques in Switzerland. They are drawn from Bern's own coordinates (46.9481°N, 7.4474°E). The schedule updates automatically at midnight, with no manual setting.
How Bern's prayer times are worked out
From Bern, the Qibla is 123° from true north. Face southeast to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 4,061 km (2,524 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Bern's own coordinates (46.95°N, 7.45°E), not a national average. That is why Bern's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.
One local quirk shapes the Bern timetable: midday prayer does not land at 12:00. Bern lies well west inside its Zurich time zone. So the sun peaks about 39 minutes after clock noon. Dhuhr follows the sun, not the clock — today it falls at 1:29 PM. Across the year, the fast here runs from about 18h 50m near June down to 10h 23m in December.
The Fajr and Isha angles for Bern come from the Muslim World League. The Muslim World League method sets Fajr when the sun is 18° below the horizon, and Isha at 17°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. We also publish times for nearby Biel/Bienne, Luzern and Basel. Each is only a few minutes off Bern's clock.

Prayer times for Switzerland's Muslim communities
Muslims make up roughly 5% of Switzerland's population. The great majority have roots in the Balkans (Kosovo, North Macedonia, Bosnia) and Turkey. Arab and other communities live alongside them in Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Lausanne. There is no national timetable; mosques and cantonal associations publish their own. This page applies the Muslim World League calculation (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°) to the city's own coordinates, on Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer). At Switzerland's latitude the summer fast is long and the winter one short.
Two minarets, and a referendum
Switzerland's oldest mosque is the Mahmud Mosque in Zurich, built by the Ahmadiyya community in 1963. It carries the first minaret raised in the country. The largest is the Geneva Mosque at Petit-Saconnex, financed by the Muslim World League. It was inaugurated in 1978 by King Khalid of Saudi Arabia and the Swiss President, and its minaret stands 22 metres. Only a handful of Swiss mosques have minarets at all: a 2009 federal referendum wrote a ban on building new ones into the constitution. Most Swiss Muslims, being Balkan or Turkish, follow the standard first-shadow Asr shown on this page.
