Prayer Times in Almaty, Kazakhstan

Prayer times in Almaty are worked out each day from the city's coordinates (43.25°N). We use the Muslim World League method, the one followed across Kazakhstan. The five times shift by a minute or two each day as the sun moves. The full month is listed below.

Almaty's times use the Muslim World League method. That is the standard followed by most mosques in Kazakhstan. They are drawn from Almaty's own coordinates (43.2525°N, 76.9115°E). The schedule updates automatically at midnight, with no manual setting.

How Almaty's prayer times are worked out

From Almaty, the Qibla is 247° from true north. Face southwest to pray toward the Kaaba. It lies 4,193 km (2,605 miles) away in a straight line across the globe. Every time on this page is worked out from Almaty's own coordinates (43.25°N, 76.91°E), not a national average. That is why Almaty's times and its Qibla differ a little from cities a short distance away.

Day length is what moves the Almaty timetable through the year. With the Muslim World League method, the longest daily fast — Fajr to Maghrib — runs about 17h 44m around June. It eases to 10h 42m by December. That is a 7h 02m swing, set by the city's latitude of 43.25°N. The farther a place sits from the equator, the wider the gap.

The Fajr and Isha angles for Almaty come from the Muslim World League. The Muslim World League method sets Fajr when the sun is 18° below the horizon, and Isha at 17°. Use ISNA's 15° instead and Fajr here would move by several minutes. So the method — not the coordinates alone — settles the final time. Almaty sits close to its Almaty meridian, so Dhuhr lands near midday — 11:59 AM today. We also publish times for nearby Tokmok, Karakol and Bishkek. Each is only a few minutes off Almaty's clock.

Two Asr times are in use in Kazakhstan

Kazakh practice is traditionally Hanafi — the Spiritual Administration's tables reflect it — so this page shows the Hanafi Asr alongside the standard time. The time shown above for Almaty is the standard reckoning — 3:52 PM. The Hanafi time today is 4:56 PM. Follow whichever your mosque announces; you can make Hanafi the default in the settings above.

One clock for a continent-sized country

Kazakhstan made a remarkable change on 1 March 2024. After almost a century split across two time zones, the entire country moved to a single zone, UTC+5, with no daylight saving. For prayer times the consequence is real. Kazakhstan spans some 40 degrees of longitude. So solar noon in the far east now falls hours from the far west on the same clock. A per-city calculation, like this page's, is the only way to stay accurate. The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kazakhstan (SAMK) was established in 1990 and publishes official tables by its own method. This page uses the Muslim World League parameters (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°), so small differences from the official table are normal.

From Turkistan's mausoleum to Astana's domes

Kazakhstan's holiest site is the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi in Turkistan. It was built between 1389 and 1405 on Timur's order, for the twelfth-century Sufi master whose poetry carried Islam across the steppe. In 2003 it became the country's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The capital tells the modern chapter. The Hazrat Sultan Mosque (2012) was among Central Asia's largest until the Astana Grand Mosque opened in 2022 and took the regional title outright. Kazakh Islam is traditionally Hanafi, and mosques announce the later, second-shadow Asr — this page shows both reckonings.

That is the congregation, called a few minutes after each prayer starts.
